Why a chocolate challenge?

Some people have asked why we chose chocolate for the SCA Packaging Design Challenge. So here is the answer…
We started with a brainstorm session, looking for a good subject. Plenty of ideas were suggested but nothing was convincing. When somebody mentioned chocolate, everybody believed it was a perfect match.
Why? Firstly, because almost everyone loves chocolate and eats it regularly (especially students!). It’s a universal product, so everyone in the contest has the same chance.
Secondly, chocolate creates a real challenge for packaging designers. Food safety standards play a role and the product is fragile, so it has to be well protected. It’s an impulse purchase but can be at the same time a quick snack or an indulging luxury. It’s sold everywhere, in all kinds of places and comes in various forms and shapes which all play a role in appealing to the consumer.
There’s one more reason why we chose chocolate. SCA Packaging is based in Brussels, and Belgium is the world’s chocolate capital.
Remember, this competition asks you to think beyond the actual package and create a new packaging solution – one that is innovative and environmentally friendly.
