Marie Carlstedt - Sales Assistant

Name: Maria Carlstedt Marie Carlstedt

Country of origin: Sweden
Position: Sales Assistant
Location: SCA Packaging Sweden AB Division Mariestad
SCA employee since: 1974

How long have you been working at SCA Packaging?

As of this September, I will have been working at SCA for 37 years. I started as a receptionist
and then worked for a while with calculation and order preparation before coming to customer service department.

What is your job exactly? What do you do? What are your responsibilities?

In my job as a sales assistant, I am the link between the customer and our internal organisation,
like ‘a spider on the web’. I work very closely with the sales people. I place orders, check delivery times, send quotes and make sure customers get the packaging they ordered.

What is the most important character trait you need to be able to work in customer service?

I think it’s very important that you enjoy working in a service environment and that you are a good listener. It’s also crucial that you are able to respond to every customer in the right way.

Have you ever lost your temper with a customer?

Oh, do I have to admit that? I remember one customer who got very angry and furious when I talked to him over the phone. I kept my cool on the phone but when he hung up I broke my head set into three pieces!

Have you ever become good friends with a customer?

For many of the customers who I talk to regularly, it feels like they are my friends! When I am off ill for instance, one of my customers always calls me at home to hear how I’m doing. I think that is sweet.

What do you like best about your job?

I like the fact that there’s always something new happening. Every day brings different challenges. And I enjoy the close contact with our customers. I also very much appreciate the cooperation with my colleagues from different departments. I often tell them jokingly that I’m glad I’m the oldest one as I’ll be the first one to leave!

Have you ever actually seen the products you sell?

I haven’t seen all the packaging I handle in the course of a day; it’s so much that I would never have time for it! But of course, I have an overall picture of what kind of packaging our
customers are buying.

What do you do to relax after a busy day?

If it’s spring, summer or autumn you will find me tending the flowerbeds in my garden or lying in my hammock underneath the cherry tree reading a book. In the winter I hibernate and read a lot and sing in a gospel choir.

How do you see your job in 5 years time? Which communication tools will have become the most important in your department?

I think that no matter how technology progresses, it will never replace the need for personal contact. The phone will remain a very important tool alongside e-mail and the internet.

What are your professional ambitions at SCA Packaging?

I’m very happy with the tasks I have today and I have no desire to change direction. I like my job too much to leave it! If I had felt any differently, I would have done something else a long time ago.

Sabrina Monteiro - Internal Sales

Name: Sabrina Monteiro Sabrina Monteiro

Country of origin: Switzerland
Position: Internal Sales
Location: SCA Packaging Oftringen, Switzerland
SCA employee since: 2004

How long have you been working at SCA Packaging?

Including my apprenticeship, I’ve been working for SCA for 7 years.

What is your job exactly? What do you do? What are your responsibilities?

I define my job as being a “full service provider” for my customers. This includes tasks such as calculating, preparing offers, handling orders as well as complaints. Although I prefer to keep the last point to an absolute minimum.

What is the most important character trait you need to be able to work in customer service?

Communication skills and an ability to cope with stress as this is counterproductive; so take it easy!

Have you ever lost your temper with a customer?

Only in my mind, I’m too professional to lose my temper (smiling).

Have you ever become good friends with a customer?

Yes, as I spend so much time working with them. I find it very important that they are friendly and honest as this is very important to me.

What do you like best about your job?

I like the variation in my daily tasks and the good cooperation with clients from all the different industry branches.

Have you actually seen the products you sell?

What a question! Of course, I see our products every day!

What do you do to relax after a busy day?

I like to relax by sitting in my chair at home, thinking about the past working day and making plans for the future. I like to go to my fitness centre and (sparkles in her eyes) a wonderful remedy for stress is also a short shopping trip.

How do you see your job in 5 years time? Which communication tools will have become the most important in your department?

Online orders will definitely be more prevalent but it’s not a very personal way to communicate. In my opinion the personal contact by phone will always play a big role in my daily business with my customers. I can’t imagine it in any other way.

What are your professional ambitions at SCA Packaging?

My ambition is to become the best counter part for our customers so that they can say:“Nobody is better than SCA!”

Sébastien Maillochon - Territory Manager

Name: Sébastien Maillochon Sébastien Maillochon

Position: Territory Manager
Location: SCA Packaging France
SCA employee since: 2006

How long have you working at SCA Packaging?

I’ve been working at SCA for 5 years now.

What is your job exactly? What do you do? What are your responsibilities?

I am in charge of a specific geographic area, in which we want to develop the positioning of SCA among our customers and prospects in the agro-food sector, a market with high potential. We first determine the needs of customers and prospects in order to offer them an efficient packaging solution. Innovation, mechanization and managing the supply chain are ways to ensure our customers maintain a sustainable and structural positioning in their market.

What is the most important character trait you need to be able to work in customer service?

Curiosity. It is essential to our mission which is to focus on future market trends and to discover the needs, constraints and expectations of our customers. It can provide the right solution and contributes to a long-term relationship based on trust with them.

Have you ever lost your temper with a customer?

Never. Humour can be a barrier to potential attacks, which are mainly an issue during negotiations.

Have you ever become friends with a customer?

Yes, but without forgetting that it is essential to maintain long-term (professional) relationships.

What do you like best about your job?

Teamwork with the different support services like the SCA Design Centre, the supply chain, my internal sales colleagues, mechanization.  All this energy together helps us satisfy our customers’ needs with tailored and customized solutions.

Have you actually seen the products you sell?

It is essential if you want to understand your customer. That’s the only way you can offer good packaging solutions. The definition, the construction is done in consultation with the design team. And in order to explain the value of a solution, how it brings value and overcomes the pre-defined constraints, you need to know how the product is presented and follow the market trends accordingly.

What do you do to relax after a busy day?

I burn excess energy by doing sports.

How do you see your job in 5 years time? Which communication tools will have become the most important in your department?

By getting better insights into market trends, we can give our clients a personalized approach and create value. In this sense, the solution is to exploit synergies in the supply chain through multi and cross functional knowledge sharing. This approach meets the needs of new market developments with high added value (display) as well as large quantities. And of course, e-business tools will be a more important future communication tool as well.

What are your professional ambitions at SCA Packaging?

Over the long-term, I hope to support SCA’s strategy and contribute to the success of the new Nantes-Atlantique plant by meeting and surpassing the proposed future challenges.

Martin Ehn

Country of origin: Austria
Position: Corrugator Deputy Shift Leader
Location: SCA Packaging Austria, Margarethen am Moos
SCA employee since: July 2005

How long have you been working at SCA Packaging?

I have been working here since July 2005, which is over 5 years now.

What is your job exactly? What do you do? What are your responsibilities?

As a deputy shift leader corrugator, I participate in the shift change. It’s also my responsibility to check the equipment,  pumps and material at the powerhouse. In addition, I check the viscosity of the glue and depending on the orders, I work at the  “Leitstand” or at any part of the corrugator.

Do you know what you are manufacturing?

I was an apprentice at SCA Packaging Austria for 3 years and during that time I learned all processes within the production area and got to know our products. At the supermarket I often find boxes that might have been produced on our machines. If friends ask me about my job, I tell them the names and brands of our customers and explain that we produce the packaging for them. Yes, you could say that I’m proud of my work!

Do you love your job?

Absolutely! What I like the most is the good working atmosphere within our team.

What are the most important advantages of your job?

I like to work in two shifts. That allows me to spend time on my hobbies and a good working atmosphere is also very  important for me. Furthermore, the job of a packaging specialist is not a very common one in Austria. I often get asked to explain the details of my position. That provides me with an opportunity to get in contact with other people.

How important are your colleagues?

Some of the people here are not only colleagues, they have become friends and we spend time on private activities together.  Once again I say: a good working atmosphere and teamwork is the most important to me.

Do you have ambitions in this company?

The position of a shift leader seems attractive to me.

What does your dream look like?

I wish I would have my own house, a wife and children. I hope all the people I love stay healthy and lucky and I don’t want to worry about financial things.

What do you do in your spare time?

I practice kickboxing and go to the gym. I also like to go out with friends, go see a movie or have a delightful diner.

Hans Schwarz - Machine Operator

Name: Hans Schwarz

Country of origin: Germany
Position: Machine Operator
Location: SCA Packaging in Nördlingen, Germany
SCA employee since: 1996

How long have you been working at SCA Packaging?

I’ve been working for SCA Packaging for 14 years now, since 1996.

What is your job exactly? What do you do? What are your responsibilities?

I’m responsible for the monitoring of the corrugator and quality control. I also have to make sure the process runs smoothly
and efficiently. I am responsible for eight employees, which means I am the contact person for those people and I ensure further training and education of the employees.

Do you know what you are manufacturing?

I am always interested to know what kind of product the corrugated board we produce becomes. I discover time and again packaging in the discount markets, which has been produced by us in Nördlingen or by other SCA plants and I’m very proud of that. It’s very important for me to know that our product is diverse and recyclable.

Do you love your job?

Yes, very much!

What are the most important advantages of your job?

Making my own decisions, that’s important to me. It’s a much diversified section; the combination of the contact with the employees and the technique and machines makes this job very interesting to me.

How important are your colleagues?

My colleagues are very important to me. As you spend so much time together, you get
to know the strengths and challenges of the employees and you can respond to them.

Do you have ambitions in this company?

Yes, hygiene and tidiness. Every Saturday I work with an external cleaning company (I
am the contact person) who cleans our machines and the rooms of administration and
companion plants. The first impression of the customer is important, that’s my motto.

What does your dream look like?

A healthy and harmonic future with my family and going back to my old home in
East Frisia someday.

What do you do in your spare time?

I love everything about old-timers. I own three cars: 2 VW Beetle drop-top and I’m working on a VW Porsche 914. I also like to run to relax myself. I run half marathons and three days a week I join a run get-together. My family is a hobby too. I like to spend time with them and do things together.

Andrea Fiordelmondo - Plant Production Manager

Country of origin: Italy
Position: Plant Production Manager

How long have you been working at SCA Packaging?

Since July 1986, so I’ve been working for this company for 24 years.

What is your job exactly? What do you do? What are your responsibilities?

As a Plant Production Manager, I coordinate the production and maintenance inside the factory. I liaise with the plant’s sales department for anything concerning production issues, like the most suitable type of paper to use to satisfy our clients. I also purchase raw materials, deal with suppliers and handle investments. We are now taking the first steps to become a Lean Company and I am the TIP Leader on the Corrugator Project. It is and it wil be an interestig challenge - also because the first part of the transformation supported by Central Office has just been completed and now it's up to us to continue!

Do you know what you are manufacturing?

Of course! It’s almost a professional bias: I always check the manufacturer and if it’s SCA, it shows!

Do you love your job?

Fortunately, I like it a lot. I’ve had other jobs in the past, but this is the one for me. What I do gives me a lot of satisfaction, especially because in our kind of production, you see straightaway if the work is well done and this reflects positively on our clients. Moreover, the Lean Programme has brought a lot of positive vibes to the plant, really encouraging communication both between people and between the various departments.

What are the most important advantages of your job?

Contact with people. Autonomy. Independence. The possibility of expressing your ideas and seeing them applied. To continuously challenge ourselves and, in the end, to be satisfied with what we have done.

How important are your colleagues?

In a factory like ours, cooperation is everything. I couldn’t do it alone.

Do you have ambitions in this company?

My ambition is to constantly improve the product and the ways in which we make it.

What does your dream look like?

That my son is happy ... always.

What do you do in your spare time?

I like to spend time with my son and take long walks at the seaside and in the mountains.
We are lucky in the area we live in: we have both close at hand!

Markus Lövgren - Project Manager

Name: Markus Lövgren Markus Lövgren
Country of origin: Sweden
Position: Project Manager
Location: SCA Packaging Järfälla, Sweden
SCA employee since: 2006
Professional qualification: Master of Science in Industrial Engineering & Management.

Why did you join SCA?

After studying at Lunds Institute of Technology, I had the opportunity to do my master thesis at SCA Packaging’s factory in Värnamo, Sweden. While working at SCA I realized what a stimulating environment the company provided. I have always been interested in packaging and logistics, so when the opportunity to start working as a project manager at SCA Packaging came to me, I did not have any second thoughts about accepting the job.

What makes SCA a special company to work for?

No matter which branch of SCA you join, you will always work for a world wide leader that keeps up with the latest technology and trends in the industry.  The dynamic environment that it creates is both challenging and inspiring. To keep up with SCA’s goals, the company is willing to invest in their personnel and will let one continue to develop as a professional, and to do so in an international setting. The combination of a goal driven organisation in a competitive world, and a company that cares for its employees makes SCA, in my opinion, very special.

What makes your job interesting?

The fact that I work at several different sites throughout Sweden with different people every day and that the projects vary from just a small implementation of new routines to planning and building an entire new factory makes the work exciting on an every day basis. It is also interesting to see how my work can change the way people view their role within the company, which allows them to see that they can make a difference for the company as a whole.

What would be your advice to those thinking about joining SCA?

SCA is always beneficial for those who work hard and towards set goals. Since master's thesis students are welcomed by the organization, I believe that is the best way for one to show why he or she is the right person for us at SCA.
