What is a total packaging concept?
Come up with an improved total packaging concept that fulfills a number of roles; protection of the goods it carries, maximization of transport efficiencies, appeal to consumers in store, fit with retailer shelves and provide consumer information about storage and use. It must meet legal requirements for labeling and it should display the goods to consumers in good condition and with evidence that the goods have not been tampered with.
What is the primary and secondary packaging?
The primary packaging is the first level of packaging that packs and protects the product. Example: for a soft drink, the can or bottle is the primary packaging.
The secondary packagig is the second level of packaging to display and transport a product through the supply chain. The secondary packaging could be a shelf ready packaging, the box on the shelfs, or also purly a transport packaging that transports a product directly to end user or business to business.

How will my work be assessed?
Our jury will assess your packaging concept based on the following criteria:
- Have you created a lean, slick, fat-free packaging that is less complex then the original packaging?
- Can you prove that your packaging concept is a better solution compared to the original packaging?
- Is your packaging solution still fullfilling all requirements of transport, protection, bundling, display in-store and attracting the end-consumer?
- Have you looked into both the primary & secondary packaging?
- Is your packaging solution also sustainable? Environmentally friendly?
- How appealing is the design to the consumer? How appealing would it be for a client?
- How is the artwork presented? Does it convince us?
- Is your concept realistic and could it be taken into production?
In February 2010, five candidates will be short listed, who will then have the chance to refine their concepts with professional designers at the SCA innovation centre in Brussels.
The final winner will be determined at our Design Challenge event in April 2010.
